Purmerend is a city with ambitions. The city is gradually developing into a complete and compact city, well positioned in the Metropoolregio Amsterdam. In the next 20 years the city will undergo the next big transformation. With a process of densification, and transformation the city is preparing itself for the future. As a part of this ambition BURA and LOLA made a masterplan for Waterlandkwartier, the station area of Purmerend.
The masterplan sets the stage for a development of the Waterlandkwartier for the next 10 to 20 years. Waterlandkwartier will together with the historical centre of Purmerend form the linear centre of Purmerend. Both districts are connected by the new city boulevard: Waterlandlaan-Purmersteenweg. As part of the masterplan the station will be moved to the Waterlandlandlaan and will become a central public transport HUB for Purmerend. The Waterlandkwartier will transform into a lively mixed, green, vibrant, and sustainable district. In the coming years 1800 dwellings, office program and amenities will be added on top of the existing program.
The masterplan can be summarized in five themes:
Robust spatial framework: Waterlandkwartier has a strong and well-defined framework of public and green spaces
New mobility: In Waterlandkwartier residents and visitors move freely without their own car.
Purmermix: Waterlandkwartier is a lively mixed city district. A place where people work and live.
Sustainable and healthy: Waterlandkwartier will contribute to a healthy planet with healthy people
New town of the future: Waterlandkwartier is a lively and mixed district with its own strong identity. In Waterlandkwartier we reinterpreted the ambitions of the architecture of the new town (human scale).
