BURA (formerly known as marco.broekman) is developing an urban plan for subarea 5 of the Merwedekanaalzone in Utrecht, a 24 hectares industrial area between Balijebrug en Socratesbrug (including Vechtclub XL), commissioned by six of the land owners. The Merwedekanaalzone is one of the appointed areas in Utrecht to accommodate the prospected inner city growth of the city of Utrecht. Since 2012 this area has been proactively been put on the map by MeerMerwede (Emilie Vlieger), but it needs a more coherent urban vision on the development possibilities and the shared values of owners, municipality and other stakeholders.
In the period September to November 2016 BURA (formerly known as marco.broekman) developed an urban vision with the owners through intensive design workshops. At the moment the vision is worked out in an urban plan, in close collaboration with Stadkwadraat, OKRA Landschapsarchitecten, Goudappel Coffeng, Merosch and Skonk. The urban plan will be a high density mixed used area, with a stong focus on green, sustainable and healthy public space framework. The existing industrial character and differentiation of urban functions serves as an inspiration for the urban plan. An intensive participation process with the city will be organized parallel to the development of the urban plan.
